課程概述

Course Description

This course is designed to help students develop communicative proficiency in English. The four skills of listening, speaking, reading, and writing are integrated by means of topics, situations, functional expressions and structures which are analyzed and personalized.

Scope

 This course includes:
- An integrated multi-skills syllabus
- Contemporary, real-world topics
- Conversational language
- Task-based listening activities
- Opportunities to share opinions and ideas
- Student-centered fluency activities
- Vocabulary-building exercises
- High-interest reading passages

Teaching and Learning Methods

The teaching of this course is guided by the conviction that to be a student at NTU is to be an autonomous, self-motivated individual, and also a member of an academic community with whom the student must interact in various roles and contexts. Teaching methods, therefore, are student-centered, task-based and collaborative. Students are guided in the classroom to ‘learn through doing’, engaging in problem-solving activities in pairs, small groups and in plenary discussions. Individual learning will be reinforced in the completion of homework assignments. The role of the instructor, therefore, is to present a new skill or language-focus, to stage and grade activities effectively, to facilitate and monitor performance of tasks in class.

課程目標
Course Objectives

By the end of the course, students should detect an improvement in their performance in the key study skills:

Their ability to deal with unfamiliar vocabulary, to survey, read and take notes from an academic text should be enhanced.

Students should feel more familiar with the basic requirements for writing a competent English academic essay.

Students should also have developed strategies for more effective note-taking in lectures, and for making their own brief oral presentations.

課程要求
Class participation

The bottom line for this portion of the grade will be the percentage of days that the student has attended class. On the basis of this percentage, the grade will then vary depending on how well the student has prepared for class and how much the student has contributed to class discussions and exercises (being an active student, using English at all times in the class, positive participation in group activities).

Homework

Any late homework will not be accepted unless prior arrangements have been made with the instructor.

Exams

There will be one midterm and one final exam. No make-up exams will be given unless the instructor is notified in advance.
